标题: Fractal Strokes
Abstract

This paper proposes fractal strokes, to make fractal computation as

controllable as ink. A fractal stroke is a skeletal stroke that recursively

copies, recolors and distorts its neighboring image and then

paint on the canvas. Fractal strokes can generate self-similar textures.

On one hand, the general visual attributes of a stroke are

decided by the user. On the other hand, a stroke’s fine details depend

on its context. Many modifications can easily been made so

that fractal strokes can probably generate various new results beyond

the scope of traditional artistic techniques.

1 Introduction

In the past decades, many NPR(Non-Photorealistic Rendering)

techniques have been proposed for simulating traditional artistic

media, but the general objective remains the same: produce results

mimicking the results produced by traditional artistic techniques

as much as possible. Thus it’s time for focusing more on another

objective of NPR: provide new tools that produce novel artistic effects.

Gooch et al stated: ”we need to discover and demonstrate

NPR algorithms that are capable of producing results beyond the

scope of traditional artistic techniques.” [Gooch et al. 2010] They

also pointed out that fractal is a new artistic medium. But fractal

arts have been mostly created by designing mathematic formulas

and experimenting with parameters until now. In other words, except

for very few works(e.g., skeletal strokes [Hsu et al. 1993]), no

approach has been proposed for manipulating fractal as manipulating

traditional artistic media.

In this paper, we present fractal strokes that combines the idea

of skeletal strokes [Hsu et al. 1993] and fractal computation. A

fractal stroke recursively copies, recolors and distorts its neighboring

image, thus can generate special inner texture presenting selfsimilarity.
